Congress gives Bush carte blanche to attack Iran

Dems abandon war authority provision:
Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other members of the leadership had decided to strip from a major military spending bill a requirement for Bush to gain approval from Congress before moving against Iran.
...
Several officials said there was widespread opposition to the proposal at a closed-door meeting last week of conservative and moderate Democrats, who said they feared tying the hands of the administration when dealing with an unpredictable and potentially hostile regime in Tehran.

I seem to recall another bill designed to "untie" President Bush's hands... Oh yeah, the Iraq War Resolution. They said then that they never thought Bush would actually use his power to go to war, it was just a negotiating tactic. Look how well that turned out. Clinton or Obama will be running for president in 2008 telling us yet again they were "sorry", that "if they knew then what they know now..." yada yada yada.

Bullshit. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

We elected the Democratic party to congress to stop the war in Iraq, not to let Bush start a new one in Iran.

To hell with these bastards. I'm voting Green.

Arthur Silber gets it exactly right:
There are only two requirements for serving in Congress or in the executive branch of our government. These requirements apply to everyone who serves today, with only a handful of exceptions. First, you must be among the very stupidest and most cowardly of Americans. And second, you must be a war criminal -- an actual war criminal, or eager and willing to become one.

I hope my senators Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein, as well as my representative Tom Lantos, and my neighbor Nancy Pelosi are Googling their names and they can see right here in print my opinion of them: They are stupid and contemptible cowards against whom I will vote even for dog-catcher. Even if they personally didn't support this move, they should be screaming bloody murder: That's their job. But no, it's party above Country for them.

It's probably already too late to actually stop our slide into tyranny. But, twenty years from now, when the children of this nation ask you: When they put the brown people into concentration camps (ala Roosevelt, a Democrat), when they jailed the war protesters (ala Woodrow Wilson, a Democrat), when they slaughtered tens or hundreds of thousands in nuclear fire (ala Harry Truman, a Democrat): Where was your head? Was it planted firmly up your ass? Were you a Good German? Or did you do something, anything, to try to stop the insanity?

You don't have to quit your job and carry a placard on the streets 24/7. You don't have to set yourself on fire on the steps of the White House. But you do have to come out publicly against this madness if you want to be able to look the next generation of Americans in the eye.

You can at least sign a petition calling for a filibuster against the war in Iraq.
